- He said, 'This, Sir, no man can explain otherwise.'
- Your obliged and most humble servant, SAM, JOHNSON. June 23, 1781.'
- The following curious anecdote I insert in Dr. Burney's own words:--
- In one of his little memorandum-books is the following minute:--
- I am, my dear,
- TO THE SAME.
- March 19, 1782.'
- TO CAPTAIN LANGTON[453], IN ROCHESTER.
- Johnson thus answered the clergyman's letter:--
- The following letters require no extracts from mine to introduce them:--
- 1. Turn all care out of your head as soon as you mount the chaise.
- 3. Do not continue any day's journey to fatigue.
- 4. Take now and then a day's rest.
- 5. Get a smart sea-sickness, if you can.
- 6. Cast away all anxiety, and keep your mind easy.
- I am, dear Sir,
- Nov. 14, 1782.'
- On the frame of his portrait, Mr. Beauclerk had inscribed,--
- Sir Joshua Reynolds communicated to me the following particulars:--
- CHARADE.
- TO SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS.
- SAM. JOHNSON.
- SIR,
- I am, Sir, Your most humble servant,
- SAM JOHNSON. London, May 31, 1783.'
- The following is another instance of his active benevolence:--
- I am, Sir, Your most humble servant,
- SAM. JOHNSON. June 2, 1783.'
- I am, Sincerely yours,
- SAM. JOHNSON. June 17, 1783.'
- I am, &c. SAM. JOHNSON[710]. June 17, 1783.'
- Two days after he wrote thus to Mrs. Thrale[711]:--
- SAM. JOHNSON. June 18, 1783.'
- I am, &c., SAM. JOHNSON. London, July 5, 1783.'
- I am, &c. SAM. JOHNSON.'
- On his return from Heale he wrote to Dr. Burney:--
- SAM. JOHNSON. London, Sept. 29, 1783.'
- His answer was dated September 30:--
- And afterwards, in a letter to Mrs. Thrale,--
- TO JAMES BOSWELL, ESQ.
- April 12, 1784.'
- Mr. Steevens adds this testimony:--
- Yours, &c. THURLOW.'
- She says of him[1061],--
- In his social intercourse she thus describes him[1072]:--
- Yet, in the same book[1073], she tells us,--
- He wrote to me July 26:--
- On the same day he wrote to Mr. Langton:--
- To Dr. BROCKLESBY, he writes, Ashbourne, July 20:--
- To MR. HOOLE:--
- To DR. BURNEY:--
- To MR. LANGTON:--
- To MR. WINDHAM:--
- DEAR SIR,
- I am, dear Sir, &c. SAM. JOHNSON.
- Lichfield, Oct. 20, 1784.'
- To Mr. Thomas Davies:--
- To SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS:--
- TO MR. JOHN NICHOLS:--
- July 26, he wrote to me from Ashbourne:--
- WILLIAM ROBERTSON, D.D.[1181]
- EDWARD GIBBON, Esq.[1183]
- MISS BURNEY[1185].
- REVEREND MR. NARES[1187].
- To which Dr. Brocklesby readily answered, from the same great poet:--
- APPENDIX A.
- APPENDIX B.
- APPENDIX C.
- Hawkins gives the two following notes:--
- He thus describes these meetings:--
- APPENDIX D.
- Miss Hawkins (_Memoirs_, i. 103) says:--
- Sir Joshua Reynolds, writing of the club, says:--
- APPENDIX E.
- APPENDIX F.
- APPENDIX G.
