- BOOK FIRST: THE PRINCE
- PART FIRST
- But she had wondered still. "It's the American way. That's all."
- II
- Again he took it in. "And also has no great means."
- He could see how little. "You'll look after her."
- III
- The Prince gave a laugh. "You might adore HIM more--!"
- The girl seemed to wonder a little. "For Mr. Verver?"
- Mrs. Assingham showed anxiety. "What is it then, dear, you want?"
- IV
- She looked at him a moment. "What do you want more?"
- She after a moment admitted it. "It's he."
- She hesitated. "Do you mean grave for me?"
- He smoked a minute: then with a groan: "Lord, are there so many?"
- The Colonel smoked on it. "She'd be so scandalised?"
- Bob Assingham wondered. "Through what?"
- Bob Assingham got up. "And you call ME immoral?"
- He had really challenged it. "In America?"
- VI
- But the reply came in English. "Oh dear no."
- He hesitated. "Look a little, and perhaps you'll make out."
- She wondered. "Even if I were to scrape off the gold?"
- She wondered. "What trick would it be?"
- He looked at her harder. "You mean you really don't know?"
- He continued to look at her. "Five pounds."
- She just paused. "For your marriage?"
- She wondered at him. "What day?"

- She hesitated. "Do you mean if you give in?"
- He stared--then he laughed. It depends on who she is."
- It had all Mr. Verver's attention. "She has 'tried'--?"
- Mr. Verver, however, still wondered. "But how many times."
- He stared. "Then don't young women tell?"
- He gave her a long, quiet look. "Who SHOULD realise if I don't?"
- XI
- He just thought. "Oh, it doesn't!"
- XII
- This, of a truth, enlarged his gaze. "But what other ways?"
- Still she debated. "Do you mean write it to her?"
- She had another hesitation. "We go over, you say, to meet them?"
- XIII
- Mr. Verver considered. "Well, hasn't he been away?"
- He thought. "Not if it satisfies you. I don't require it."

- He continued to look at her hard. "You give me up then?"

- He waited for a moment. "Never?"
- He seemed to wonder. "It leaves you more alone."
- He stared a moment at her tone. "She would do anything for us."
- He wondered again. "Unless as taking care of THEM."
- Oh, Charlotte's measure of it was only too full. "Beatifically."
- He wondered a moment. "Not afraid of what?"
- Firmly and gravely she kept his hand. "It's too beautiful."

- He had a slight show of surprise. "Shouldn't you?"
- XXII
- He took it, but thinking yet. "Then what does she dream--?"
- Well, he could put it as he liked. "I know the name of the inn."
- Well, it was all right. "You shall have everything."
- XXIII
- He followed at his own pace. "Their situation?"
- He turned it over. "That danger BEING the blindness--?"
- He had a pause. "Do you think Maggie so blind?"
- Well, he considered. "It IS rather rum,"
- XXIV
- He hesitated. "And your point is that they're not doing so?"
- He thought. "Worse than that Charlotte--?"
- He was almost simultaneous. "Extraordinary!"
- He hesitated. "With the Prince--?"
- She took a moment to meet it. "How do you know how he behaves?"
- He wondered. "What do you call the most?"
- The Colonel took it in. "Then she's a little heroine."
- Well, he made it up. "Like a Prince?"
- He looked a trifle disappointed. "I see. For US."
- He wondered. "But how can we be more--?"
- Her husband looked impressed. "Watches him?"
