共 81 题- HELEN ALLISTON
- Denis said, surprised, "The Reve d'or shares?"
- She said coldly, "Her name is Kate Kearney."
- Nell roused to a perfunctory--
- Miss Kezia paused and said:--
- Nell flashed out a shaky interruption--
- The Atom observed calmly:--
- The cake disposed of, she lifted up a sweet little voice, and sang:--
- She began again:--
- Nell broke in hastily, "I have spoken to him over the wall."
- Denis suggested, "_Used_ not to know?"
- Nell almost chanted aloud:--
- But Nell squashed her with a guiltily unkind, "What's a jogglefry book?"
- She said coldly, "It--it is a private matter!"
- He beamed. "Zat is right, meine liebe. All will be well now."
- The maid hesitated. "If you could, miss--"
- She turned to the door, but Molly jumped up. "No, I'll go!"
- Presently, uneasily, "Do you hate me for being so hard, Sheila Pat?"
- Ted looked up earnestly, his brush pausing:--
- Presently, "Well, you're not at all bad--_for England_."
- Sheila Pat demanded, "What are you laughin' at?"
- Nell said demurely:--
- Molly gasped:--
- Nell said, still laughing:--
- But presently he began to laugh again:--
- He whistled a bar of "Widow Macree."
- Nell declared with an airy recklessness, "Oh, they're all maniacs!"
- Longer pause. Then, tragically:--
- Sheila Pat suggested, "I think Tommy would like to come, too."
- She bent toward him; she said softly:--
- She shivered. "And you?"
- The voices at the window started the next verse:--
- Ted punched back. "Awfully sorry--thought you were the sofa cushion!"
- She nodded. "You'll spend New Year's day with us, won't you?"
- He smiled. "I'll promise, Nell."
- When he had gone Nell began at once:--
- There was a knock at the door. "Come in!"
- Sheila Pat queried earnestly:--
- Nell went forward, laughing:--
- With eyes cast down, she began rather tremulously:--
- Ted groaned dismally. "There's another pin--in my shoulder!"
- So now Nell responded with a "Why?"
- Nell broke in suddenly, "Good gracious, _how are we to get in_?"
- Then--"I do not go to nurse my sick friends for _enjoyment_, Molly!"
- Inside and outside the door there was laughter then. Then a despairing--
- Nell interrupted, "Here's a comb and here's a ribbon."
- Miss Kezia hesitated, then she said:--
- She began wildly:--
- Miss Kezia flung open the window, and called out:--
- Denis, in the hall, observed gloomily:--
- Molly began, "Why, you just said--"
- Sheila Pat got paper and ink and began:--
- Miss Kezia put her head round the door again
- Denis translated into the wet ear nearest to him:--
- Denis came in. "I say, Aunt Kezia's waiting. Come and confess, Atom!"
- When he was going, she stopped him:--
- Oh, go away! Go away! _Quick_--"
- They stood a minute, looking into the fire. Then Nell said:--
- He answered without any hesitation:--
- They were silent a little while. Presently he said:--
- She asked interestedly, "Were you 'lirious?"
- She sat forward, her face alight with eagerness
- Eagerly she interrupted, "Did you worry and _worry_?"
- And to Kate Kearney she presently whispered:--
- From above:--
- Nell volunteered sweetly:--
- Tucking Denis into his coat a little later, she said, "I pity her."
- At lunch time he observed to Nell:--
- When Ted bade them good night, he said hesitatingly:--
- Molly thrust her head round the door. "Aunt Kezia is coming!"
- Nell said, "Oh, you bad puppy!"
- She said quietly, "What is it, Ted?"
- The woeful change in her face made him add weakly:--
- Ted said heavily, "It's an awful responsibility."
- On the way back Nell said hesitatingly:--
- Molly, at once proud and horrified, plunged forthwith:--
- Miss Kezia said slowly:--
- Denis said:--
- As Nell left the room, the Atom's voice pursued her:--
- At last Nell turned to him:--
- He took the letter and read:--
