- I asked Ian:
- WHAT TIME IS MEETING? ALSO WHOSE BYLINE?
- 3 (JULY 24, THURS.)
- He shrugged. "File them in the circular file."
- I handed him the clipboard and he went back around the desk.
- The phone rang. I answered it: "Desk, Kent."
- 4 (JULY 25, FRI.)
- The TV man asked Reev: "Ready?"
- 5 (JULY 26, SAT.)
- I recognized the voice, which continued on a note of agitation:
- I switched to another station.
- The bartender went to the new arrival and said, "What'll it be?"
- I waited till his concoction had been served to him, then said:
- He left and I said to Mae: "Well?"
- I grabbed Mae and hauled her ahead to the curb.
- 6 (JULY 27, SUN.)
- He thought that over. "What's sauce for the goose, eh?"
- I sensed that he had dried up.
- I dropped two dimes at the cashier's counter.
- 7 (JULY 28, MON.)
- I said thanks and got out.
- I filled Stew in as the cab driver wended us uptown.
- I nodded as I wrote them down.
- 8 (JULY 29, TUES.)
- It became a mob. Somebody shouted, "That nigger shot the Sheriff!"
- 9 (JULY 30, WED.)
- 10 (JULY 31, THURS.)
- I joined him and looked. "Where?"
- He hesitated. "Aren't you coming, Uncle Sam?"
- 11 (AUG. 1, FRI.)
- He smiled and said, "Sit down," indicating the other chair. "Yankees."
- I woke up in the nine-foot cube.
- After a while I said, "Hey!"
- I lay down and the light went out. I sat up again. The light came on.
- 12 (AUG. 2, SAT.)
- 13 (AUG. 3, SUN.)
- I hoped I hadn't overdone it. But Mox was beaming.
- 14 (AUG. 4, MON.)
- I rang the bell.
- I followed Joy out, not unwillingly.
- I made for the farther bar across the room, where I'd spotted Joy Linx.
- 15 (AUG. 5, TUES.)
- 16 (AUG. 6, WED.)
- Reb said as we went out, "Have one for me. I need it."
- I didn't drink. Neither did Ian.
- 17 (AUG. 7, THURS.)
- 18 (AUG. 8, FRI.)
- I put the bag down again.
- I went out to the helicopter a very confused man.
- I asked my question: "Who represents the Monolithians?"
- I grinned. "Yes, sir. The cast may change, but never the language."
- Stew looked hurt. "I thought we were pals."
- KENT HERE. TESTING.
- She laughed. "It's their code name. It stands for World Press Pool."
- Joy said, "A penny for your thoughts."

- I got to my feet, unable to look away from his eyes.
- My head was beginning to throb again. "I hope so."
- One of the cloaked men came toward us. He smiled. "Mr. Kent?"
- The Monolithian nodded. "And--?"
- 23 (AUG. 13, WED.)
- I dialed the _Washington Post_'s number and asked for the city desk.
- I hung up on him, the jerk, and went back to the typewriter.
- 24 (AUG. 14, THURS.)
- I wasn't gagged, so I said "Hey."
- She said to me, "It's for you, Sam. I--I think it's the President."
- To Spookie I said, "Any objections, muscles?"
- She said, "Sure. Don't worry. I'm not worried about them."

- The last line of her letter was: "One last thing, Sam--I hate you."
- That had made her farewell read: "I can't hate you."
- I wished her joy and ordered a fourth martini.
- 30 (AUG. 20, WED.)
- I tried to explain it to Mae over breakfast.
