- THE COMING OF MR. QUIN
- Evesham moved uneasily. "Oh! drop it, Laura," he muttered. "_Not here!_"
- From her place in the shadow she spoke again. "Mr.--Capel?"
- Evesham threw a couple more logs on the fire. "A drink?"
- Conway stared at him. "What d'you mean? I don't understand."
- The interruption seemed to disconcert Evesham. "I beg your pardon?"
- Portal shook his head. "Extraordinary."
- THE SHADOW ON THE GLASS
- Jimmy Allenson looked up quickly. "A window?"
- Porter raised his eyebrows. "I see. Danger, not to life, but to morals."
- AT THE BELLS AND MOTLEY
- Mr. Satterthwaite looked sharply at him. "But surely you agree--"
- THE SIGN IN THE SKY
- Mr. Satterthwaite looked at him undecidedly. "You think I ought to go?"
- THE SOUL OF THE CROUPIER
- Franklin Rudge stared. "I don't get you."
- She sank down again. "I see."
- THE WORLD'S END
- She looked at him curiously. "Why are you so anxious to come with me?"
- Miss Nunn brightened up. "Where is it?"
- THE VOICE IN THE DARK
- Margery shook her head. "No, I didn't. It must have been someone else."
- Margery was staring at him. "Who--who is she then?"
- THE FACE OF HELEN
- Aloud he said, "And Mr. Eastney--"
- There was silence, then Eastney said, "Who are you?"
- THE DEAD HARLEQUIN
- Bristow stared at him. "Useful, that's a queer word."
- He went on: "I want you to come round now to my house, at once."
- THE BIRD WITH THE BROKEN WING
- He took her hand. "So it's that, is it? Mr. Right has come along?"
- Next to him--
- He hesitated, then asked if he might see--if, that is--
- Her son's. But he and Madge--
- He held out the string. Keeley took it. "What's this?"
- THE MAN FROM THE SEA
- The young man stared at him. "Never heard of it. What is it?"
- Cosdon laughed. "Why, my hair's gray. I'm forty--"
- His interest stirred, Mr. Satterthwaite said gravely, "That depends."
- She paused a long time, and Mr. Satterthwaite said at last, "And then?"
- There was a pause, then he said slowly, "Something's gone wrong."
- She gave a low cry. "How did you know? How did you know?"
- He interrupted her again. "Not necessarily."
- She was silent a moment or two and then she said, "I promise."
- And Mr. Satterthwaite answered, "Yes, I expected you."
- HARLEQUIN'S LANE
- John Denman looked at him curiously. "You mean?"
- She shook her head. "No--there is no need to put it off."
- For a moment he thought--
- She drew in her breath sharply. "So--you have guessed."
- The maid's eyes widened in surprise. "Yes, sir. Didn't you see her?"
