Boriya.—A tribe of village servants and cultivators found chiefly in

the Cawnpur and Hardoi Districts. Their sub-castes show that they are

closely connected with, if not an offshoot of, the great Pâsi tribe.

Thus we find among their sub-divisions Arakh, Baheliya, Gûjar, Khangâr,

Kisân, Luniya, Pâsi, Râjpâsi, Rakhpâsi. Some, again, are local

sections, such as Ajudhyabâsi, Antarbedi, Baiswâr, Banârasi, Brijbâsi,

Kanaujiya, Mahobiya; others imply some connection with other tribes as

Bhurtiya, Chauhân, Ghosi, Hâra, Kaithiya, Kathwâns, and Sombansi.

Others are occupational, as Ghurcharha, “horsemen;” Khetwâl, “field

men.”
