- 1. THE MEETING
- Her eyes were suspicious. "You mean you're givin' me this knife?"
- She eyed the pack. "You wouldn't have some real nice gingham?"
- She said doubtfully, "Best make it three."
- She eyed the scissors. "Can I have them, too?"
- She said, as though suddenly remembering, "I've got a dollar."
- The two raised threatening pick axes. "Are you deef?"
- One of the men said, "Take him, Buff."
- 2. BAD LUCK
- The clerk was staring intently at the pencil. "Where'd you get that?"
- There came a snappish but calmer voice. "Take it easy, Pierre."
- The constable shrugged. "It depends."
- 3. ESCAPE
- Jeff said blandly, "I've been in jail before."
- Pop asked, "Got any more?"
- Pop came to the cell. "What you want?"
- Jeff went to the front of the cell. "Yes?"
- Jeff chuckled. "Too bad, Ike. But I don't want to break jail."
- Suddenly inspired, he called, "Pop!"
- Bucky said fretfully, "Jeff."
- Jeff shook a chiding finger at Pal. "Stop yelling!"
- Joe Parker spoke, "How'd you like to get out, peddler?"
- The constable retorted grimly, "We don't aim to hunt _that_ hard."
- Ike looked pained. "What do you want for getting out of jail?"
- Jeff was startled by the gruff command, "Wait thar!"
- 4. THE CABIN
- Barr Whitney watched silently, then said, "Give me leave to look at it."
- The other spoke again, "You swap?"
- Barr Whitney asked, "Trade knives?"
- Barr Whitney pointed down a valley. "Thar."
- Jeff raised both hands and heard, "Turn around!"
- 5. DAN
- Jeff said gently, "Put your gun down, son."
- Jeff was astounded. "Your pop's dog?"
- Uncertainty stole some of the boy's fury. "You--you did?"
- Again Jeff was surprised. "What were you doing there?"
- Dan looked doubtfully at Jeff. "Do you really think so?"
- Abel Tarkman looked doubtfully at the rest. "It's a lot to carry."
- Bill Ellis was suspicious. "Since when?"
- Bill Ellis guessed, "The kid toted the gun. Does he want the shells?"
- 6. VISITOR
- Jeff asked pleasantly, "Something I can do for you?"
- Pal subsided and Pete said nasally, "Blazer allus call't him Buster."
- Pete's shifty eyes found Jeff's pack. "Peddler, huh?"
- Pete was honestly astounded. "You mean they's some what cain't?"
- Jeff said proudly, "Ever see anything like that?"
- 7. GRANNY
- Jeff said quietly, "Come out of it, Dan."
- Dan asked, "You think we will get him, don't you?"
- Dan's eyes sparkled. "That sounds like fun!"
- Jeff asked quickly, "Can I count on that?"
- Jeff grinned. "Right now let's go peddling--and leave the shotgun here."
- Her head flitted like a bird's. "And I'm Granny Wilson."
- Dan said bashfully, "He was my pop."
- Jeff looked at the rifle. "Have you been hunting?"
- Jeff asked, "Do you do much of this sort of thing?"
- Jeff said gently, "I think you've kept busy a long while around here."
- Jeff said, "Ike and Bucky didn't seem to have any definite plans."
- Jeff said recklessly, "Let's call it a gift, Granny."
- Dan looked and shuddered. "Gee!"
- Jeff breathed, "Why hasn't anyone else seen these, Granny?"
- She seemed crestfallen. "I didn't think you would."
- Jeff hazarded a guess, "Twenty-five dollars."
- 8. ACKERTON
- Dan's bunk rustled and he whispered, "Jeff."
- Dan said reluctantly, "All right, Jeff. Can I take the shotgun?"
- HOTEL KENNARD, ACKERTON'S BEST
- The cabbie looked questioningly at him. "The Kennard?"
- Jeff rose with a curt, "Don't you have any new suits?"
- Mr. Calworth's eyes followed his movements. "What do you have there?"
- Jeff shrugged. "Look at it. Can that be mass-produced?"
- Jeff deliberated. Then, "I hadn't thought of an agency."
- The man smiled. "Mister, I sell antiques. I do not buy them."
- 9. MIGHTY MISSION
- Jeff smiled. "You're good enough."
- The clerk consulted a time table. "Five-three."
- 10. BOMBSHELL
- Dan glared. "I don't talk to no blamed Whitneys!"
- Barr's eyes clouded. "Mind your tongue, boy."
- Bill Ellis came nearer and whispered, "Where you been?"
- Bill Ellis' shrug was more sensed than seen. "You got a gun?"
- Jeff called softly, "Bill."
- Dan said stubbornly, "I can't go."
- Dan hesitated. "You promise, Jeff?"
- 11. THE TALKING TREE
- Pete sneered. "Let 'em come. They won't find us."
- Jeff said pointedly, "Five against one?"
- Jeff snarled back, "I don't lie and I can prove it!"
- Still furious, Barr regarded him steadily. "How do ya know that?"
- Barr was momentarily bewildered. "None saw the need."
- Grant said hopefully, "Maybe 'twar an outlander."
- Barr glowered at him. "An' how do we do that!"
- Sweat broke out on Pete's forehead. "Hit--Hit--'Twarn't me!"
- Barr spat, "'Twar you!"
- Pete half screamed. "He had a rifle an' shot afore I did!"
- Barr said relentlessly, "Whar was his rifle?"
- Barr looked squarely at him. "So you say."
- Barr's eyes flamed. "Are ye a policeman?"
- Jeff's brain was still whirling. "No."
- 12. SURPRISE
- The men came to the cabin and Barr said, "This is hit."
- Jeff spoke over his shoulder. "You sure the place isn't haunted?"
- Barr glared at him. "What is?"
- Barr broke out suddenly, "I can't plumb ya. Can't plumb ya a'tall!"
- Barr's eyes searched Jeff's. "Why'd the boy say it?"
- Barr wrinkled his brows. "But ye be no policeman?"
- It was Barr's turn to shrug. "Shoot ya."
- Barr asked suspiciously, "What ye flustered about?"
- Barr remained alert. "Whar'd ye get Blazer's dog?"
- Jeff said irritably, "Don't be a darn fool!"
- Barr chuckled derisively. "Peddlin' teach you sech tall tales?"
- Barr seemed dumfounded. "Doggone!"
- Barr snarled, "This ain't your mix!"
- Jeff asked, "What's the big idea, Ike?"
- Pete muttered sullenly, "Got nothin' to do with Bucky."
- Sweat glistened on Pete's brow. "I had naught to do with it!"
- Pete gasped, "What you goin' to do with me?"
