This fragment Becq de Fouquières thought was meant as part of the _Art
d'aimer_, but G. de Chénier says that it is, in the MS., marked with the
sign _El._ (elegy).
L. 6. _qui ne font qu'un._ These words are struck out in the MS. No
doubt Chénier thought the phrase too hackneyed.
L. 14. _infidèles._ Not to be trusted, treacherous, perfidious, as in
this line: 'Je n'ai que trop connu leurs larmes _infidèles_,' Voltaire,
_Orph._ III. i.
