_Chain Stitch._—Make a loop of twine, and draw the twine through each
loop thus made, until the chain is of the required length.
_Close Chain Stitch._—Insert the hook in loop of preceding row, and
draw twine through both this loop and the loop on the needle at the
same time.
_Single Crochet._—Pass the hook through a loop of the last row, bring
twine through, throw the twine around the needle and draw it through
the two loops on the needle.
_Double Crochet._—Turn the twine around the needle once, pass the hook
through a loop of preceding row, bring twine through, throw the twine
around the needle and draw it through two loops, turn the twine again
around the needle and draw it through the two next loops.
_Treble._—Turn the twine twice around the needle, work as double
crochet, bringing twine through two loops three times.
_Double Double Crochet._—Turn twine three times around the needle,
work as double crochet, bringing twine through two loops four times.
_Slip Stitch._—This stitch is used in joining. Take the hook from the
last loop worked, pass it through the loop where the work has to be
joined; then take the first loop spoken of and draw it through.
* The above are the primitive or foundation stitches, of which all
fancy stitches are modifications or combinations.
