_Kabanóv._ O God, it is she! (_Wants to run off. Mrs. Kabanóv holds him
back._) Mamma, let me go, I must! I will save her! or I will
myself--what is the use of living without her!
_Mrs. Kabanóv._ I will not let you, indeed not! Kill yourself for her
sake!--is she worth it? She has brought enough disgrace on us without
this!
_Kabanóv._ Let me!
_Mrs. Kabanóv._ They ’ll save her without you. I ’ll curse you if you
go.
_Kabanóv_ (_falling on his knees_). Just to look at her!
_Mrs. Kabanóv._ You will look at her when they have pulled her out.
_Kabanóv_ (_rises. To the crowd._) Well, friends, did you see anything?
_First._ It is dark down there, you can’t see anything. (_A noise behind
the scene._)
_Second._ They are calling there, but I can’t make out what.
_First._ That is Kulígin’s voice.
_Second._ They are walking along the bank with a lantern.
_First._ They are coming this way. They are carrying her. (_A few people
are returning._)
_One of the Returning Men._ Kulígin is a fine fellow! Here close by, in
the whirlpool, by the shore: with the fire we could see a distance off
in the water, and he saw her dress, and pulled her out.
_Kabanóv._ Is she alive?
_Another Man._ Alive? Why, she leaped high: the bank is steep here, and
she must have fallen on an anchor, the poor woman is bruised! And yet,
my friends, she looks as though alive! Only on the temple there is a
small wound, and only one small drop of blood. (_Kabanóv starts to run,
and meets Kulígin with the people carrying Katerína._)
