SCENE 5. MRS. KABANÓV, KABANÓV, AND KULÍGIN

_Kulígin._ They say, they saw her here.

_Kabanóv._ Is it certain?

_Kulígin._ They certainly saw her.

_Kabanóv._ Thank the Lord they saw her alive.

_Mrs. Kabanóv._ And you have been frightened and crying! And for whom?

Don’t fret: she will give us plenty of trouble yet.

_Kabanóv._ Who would have thought that she would come here! It is such a

public place. Who would ever think of hiding here.

_Mrs. Kabanóv._ You see for yourself what she is doing. The creature she

is! She wants to keep up her character! (_People come from all sides

with lanterns._)

_One of the Crowd._ Well, have you found her?

_Mrs. Kabanóv._ Why, no. She is vanished.

_A Few Voices._ I declare! That is strange! Where could she hide?

_One of the Crowd._ She will be found!

_Another._ Of course, she will be!

_A Third._ She will come herself, I think. (_A voice behind the scene_:

“Hoa there, a boat!”)

_Kulígin_ (_from the river bank_). Who is calling? What is up? (_Voice_:

“A woman has thrown herself in the water!” _Kulígin and several men

after him run out._)
