718. =salve=; although few grammars mention it, one of the
uses of the present and imperfect subjunctive in an independent
verb is when the verb is accompanied by some word meaning
'perhaps,' usually _quizás_ or _tal vez_. One can supply an expression
of possibility and _que_, but the fact remains that this is just
as good a case of a subjunctive in a main clause as is _Vaya usted
con Dios_. The subjunctive is not _required_ with a 'perhaps'
word, however; cf. _quizás desea_, line 773.
724. =Antes que nosotros está la cortesía=; _courtesy is to be
considered before ourselves_.
773 =Quizás desea=; compare the note above on line 718.
The use of the indicative implies less doubt in the mind of the
speaker than the subjunctive.
851. =acabe de hundirse=, _be completely ruined. Acabar_ here
has its original meaning, not its common idiomatic one.
