THE JACKAL AND THE CROCODILE

_Verses_.--In the original they are--

_Gâdar, ghar kyâ lâyâ?

Kyâ chîz kamâyâ?

Ki merâ khâtir pâyâ._

Jackal, what hast thou brought home?

What thing hast thou earned?

That I may obtain my wants.

The story has a parallel in most Indian collections, and two in

_Uncle Remus_, in the stories of 'The Rabbit and the Wolf' and of

'The Terrapin and the Rabbit.'
