[This is the ASCII or "rock-bottom" version of the text for people whose

text readers cannot handle the "real" (Unicode, UTF-8) or even the

simplified Latin-1 version. Differences include:

--the "oe" and "ae" ligatures are each two letters

--all fractions are written out as 1/2, 1/4...

--the word "Pise" is missing its accent

--a few symbols such as the "Section" and "Pound" (currency) signs

have had to be shown in an alternative form

In illustration captions, small capitals are shown as +text+; in the

advertising, the +same symbols+ represent boldface.

Headers of odd-numbered pages changed from page to page. These have been

marked as [Headnote] and are added to the Table of Contents in brackets

to aid in text searching.

In the body text, _s._ and _d._ (shillings and pence) were always

italicized; in the advertising, all prices were printed in boldface.

Both have been left unmarked to reduce visual clutter.

Errors and other problems are listed at the end of the e-text.]
