SOLUBLE COMBINED ACIDS.

The aqueous portion of the distillate which contained the soluble

combined acids of the oil was neutralized with barium carbonate,

concentrated and precipitated with silver nitrate solution. Only a

small precipitate resulted. This precipitate was found to contain 55.9

per cent of silver, which corresponds to silver butyrate. Hence the

acid in the distillate was butyric acid.
