[Bailey, in his _Dictionary_, says, "An abele-tree is a fine kind of

white poplar." See also Chambers' _Cyclopædia_.]

_Southey._--There is a _jeu d'esprit_ attributed to Southey, on the

expedition of Napoleon into Russia, beginning,--

"Buonaparte must needs set out

On a summer's excursion to Moscow,"

and ending,--

"But there's a place which he must go to,

Where the fire is red, and the brimstone blue,

Sacre-bleu, ventre-bleu,

He'll find it hotter than Moscow."
