- HAIL TO THE CHIEF!
- Katherine laughed. "I didn't know you could climb like that."
- Katherine started. "Mrs. Slawson?"
- He laughed aloud. "How the deuce does she know?"
- Martha extended a quiet, but coercive palm. "Hand it over."
- Cora's voice sank. "I didn't know 'twas wrong, mother."
- Martha nodded. "Well, if Lord Ronald is willin'----"
- Sam looked up. "Say, mother, you ain't down-hearted, are you?"
- Martha nodded. "The pasture?"
- Sam considered. "Then what's the use of keeping the poor girl hid?"
- Mrs. Slawson bowed civilly. "Same to you, sir."
- The old woman raised her chin. "Thank you, young man. You flatter me!"
- He shook his head. "No."
- Mrs. Ronald laughed. "Joepyeweed, yes. You got the idea."
- He corrected her gravely. "No, the evening star."
- It was all perfectly plausible, and yet--
- A faint smile flitted across Katherine's face
- Katherine shook her head. "I couldn't touch it. I'm not hungry."
- Mr. Frank sent down word, "Certainly!"
- Then--"Where's Katherine?"
- The look said, "Slawson, you're a good woman!"
