After scouring and rinsing, prepare a bath with one and one-half ounces
alum per gallon of water, at 75-80° F., and lay the feathers down in it
over night. On the next morning rinse them in cold water; then dye them
at hand-heat to nearly boiling heat in a strained decoction of Brazil
wood (or camwood, hypernic, etc.) until the required shade is obtained,
and rinse in warm water to which some tartar has been added; starch
and dry.
