- He scowled. "Go into the next room, if you're bashful. I won't peek."
- Laura blinked in surprise. "I don't understand."
- Laura felt chillier. "What do you want me to do to prove it?"
- She took a step back. "But--show myself to you? I don't understand--"
- The girl looked down worriedly at her. "How are you feeling?"
- Laura shrugged. "Look for work, I guess. What else is there to do?"
- The clerk nodded. "Okay. We've got a room. Three-fifty okay?"
- Her heart thundered. _Don't freeze up_, she thought. _Don't muff it._
- She smiled urbanely. "Ten is the price."
- Laura smiled. "Cheers."
- Laura frowned. "Why, no. I forgot all about it."
- A different voice--smooth, almost oily--said, "Miss Haynes?"
- He smiled. "Laura."
- She smiled in faint confusion. "A drink? You mean, we'll get out now?"
- Laura forced a smile. "Mr. McCarten and I had--some unpleasantness."
- Laura glanced at the table. "No."
- Laura nodded. "Very well."
- Laura shrugged. "Yes."
- Marilyn gasped. "Five hundred--!"
- Marilyn looked up, anguish on her thin face, "I figured."
- Laura whistled. "So much?"
- Laura felt a flutter of nervousness. "When?"
- Tania said, "Is he asleep?"
- Laura thought fast. "How about Tuesday? That's a good night for me."
- The door opened. "Hello," McDermott said. "You're Laura, I take it?"
- She smiled. "This isn't Boston."
- She smiled. "I'd like some more champagne, Bob."
- She began to panic. "I've got to make a telephone call!"
- Laura said, "Don't worry, Bob--"
- The big blonde grinned at Laura. "They pull you outa that hotel?"
- The woman smiled. "_Por favor donde estamos?_"
- Laura smiled wanly. "When did he find out I was here?"
- Laura shuddered. "The poor man."
- She began to shiver. "N-no."
- A moment later Spinelli's voice came over crisply: "Laura?"
- The nurse on duty frowned. "Who is it you would like to see?"
- The nurse looked more sympathetic. "Are you a relative of Mr. Bittner?"
- There was a pause. Laura said, "Is he conscious?"
- She said, "I'm sorry, Miss Haynes."
- He looked up in surprise as she swept into the room. "Laura--"
- Laura said, "Hello, Ned. Long time no see."
- Laura said, "Why were you here, honey?"
- There was a click. "Police headquarters."
