Mr. Godfrey was educated at the Royal Academy of Music, of which he is
now a Fellow. He was appointed Bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards by
the late Prince Consort, and his first duty was to play into London
the Brigade of Guards returning from the Crimea, for which occasion
he composed a march called "The Return of the Guards." He was created
honorary Second Lieutenant on the Queen's Jubilee, and his term of
service has been prolonged beyond the usual age limit by special desire
of Her Majesty.
