Joynes-Meissner German Grammar.
By Edward S. Joynes, Prof. of Mod. Langs., S. C. College. Half leather.
390 pages. Price by mail, $1.25. Introduction price, $ 1.12.
This book aims to supply a want not heretofore met--of a German grammar
at once sufficiently elementary and progressive for the beginner, and
sufficiently systematic and complete for the advanced student, yet
within reasonable limits of size and price.
The special circular on the book furnishes ample evidence that it has
taken its place in the very front rank of grammars intended for
class-room use. We quote the following:--
=H. K. Schilling=, _Asst. Prof. of German, Harvard Univ._: A decidedly
more useful book than the more scientific grammars now generally in use
in our higher institutions.
=Chas. E. Fay=, _Prof. of Mod. Lang., Tufts Coll., Mass._: I know of no
grammar which seems to me so thoroughly to meet the needs of high school
and college classes.
=J. R. Holzworth=, _Prof. of German, Syracuse Univ._: We have used it
several years. I regard it as the best German grammar in the country for
elementary courses.
=E. R. Ruggles=, _Prof. of German, Dartmouth Coll._: It is by far the
best German grammar with which I am acquainted.
=Professor Seiler=, _Indiana State Normal School_: I give it my
unqualified indorsement. I find it a first-rate working text.
=Carla Wenckebach=, _Prof. of German, Wellesley Coll._: The best book of
its kind. It gives all necessary grammatical information in a
well-arranged system and in a clear and concise form; it is happy in
illustration and practical in its exercises. I trust it will have the
extended use it so richly deserves.
=Sylvester Primer=, _Prof. of Mod. Lang., Univ. of Texas_: I have used
it and can give it my hearty recommendation as the very best text-book
for acquiring a practical knowledge of German. It will prove the best
German grammar either in America or Europe.
=J. H. Gorrell=, _Prof. of Mod. Langs., Wake Forest Univ._: The longer I
use it the more I am convinced that its superior as a working grammar of
German has not yet appeared in this country.
=H. E. Northrop=, _Prof. of German, Brooklyn, Polytechnic Inst._: It is
giving great satisfaction.
Alternative English Exercises.
To accompany the _Joynes-Meissner Grammar_. By O. F. LEWIS of Tufts
College. Paper. 54 pages. Introduction price, 15 cents.
This little pamphlet gives two sets of English exercises corresponding
to the set in the _Joynes-Meissner Grammar_, and so enables the teacher
to use a different set of exercises with three successive beginning
classes, to avoid the yearly repetition of the same sentences.
