explicitly not made. They were retained to preserve what the author
wrote, for it is unclear if the errors are the printer’s or the
author’s. Only egregious errors were mentioned as retentions, the
trivial were not.
The Synopses and Dictionary entries were originally printed in two
columns per page.
The brief Table of Contents on page viii was added by the transcriber.
One footnote was reindexed.
Quote marks in quoted material, whether verse or prose, were left as
printed.
Entries similar to the entry for “ACTON (Roger).” on page 41, which
includes the reference to “_See_ =Roger Acton=.”, were silently
standardized to add a line break between the entry and the reference.
Most instances of non-standardized spacing were standardized.
In the dictionary, the reference that often ends each entry was
silently moved to a new line--most were already on a new line--for
standardization. See “ACANTHUS-WREATH.” on page 39 for an example.
Those references were also rewrapped.
On page 17, the title “FORM, THE, FORM, THE” is from the first line of
the mentioned sonnet, namely “The form, the form alone is eloquent!”.

such entry that is out of order is “ANGUISANT.” on page 52.
