I. 1.

In Salamis’ profound retreat

Famed for the luscious treasures of the bee,

High raised above th’ encircling sea

Thou, Telamon, didst fix thy regal seat;

Near to those sacred hills, where spread

The olive first its fragrant sprays,

To form a garland for Minerva’s head,

And the Athenian splendor raise:

With the famed archer, with Alcmena’s son

Thou cam’st exulting with vindictive joy;

By your confederate arms was Ilion won,

When from thy Greece thou cam’st our city to destroy.
