Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie:
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you 'grave for me:
_Here he lies where he long'd to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill._
_Alice Meynell_
Alice Meynell was born in London in 1850. She was educated at home and
spent a great part of her childhood in Italy. She has written little,
but that little is on an extremely high plane; her verses are simple,
pensive and always distinguished. The best of her work is in _Poems_
(1903).
