Themis, daughter of heaven and of earth, was the goddess of Justice, She
wears a bandage over her eyes, and holds in her hands a sword, scales, and
the mirror of truth. Her temple is always open.

Astraea, with Law and Peace, are her children, the former of whom was
worshipped as Justice on the earth during the golden age; but the
wickedness of mankind drove her from the world, during the succeeding
periods of brass and iron, and she was placed among the constellations of
the Zodiac, under the name of Virgo. She is represented as a maiden, with a
stern but majestic countenance, holding a pair of scales in one hand, and a
sword in the other.
