- SAIL HO! OR, A BOY AT SEA, BY GEORGE MANVILLE FENN.
- CHAPTER ONE.
- A BOY AT SEA.
- So to begin:--
- Quite a little chorus of warnings, and then--
- And directly after--
- CHAPTER TWO.
- My companion stared hard at me. "What's your name?"
- I said "Thankye," and he went on cross-examining me.
- I shook my head.
- CHAPTER THREE.
- CHAPTER FOUR.
- I waited a minute and then a bolt was drawn.
- I entered, to find the young doctor hurriedly dressing.
- CHAPTER FIVE.
- I saw Miss Denning look pained, and press her brother's arm.
- I was passing on, but Mr Denning made a sharp gesture.
- I stared at him in surprise.
- I looked at him wonderingly, and he smiled.
- I hurriedly offered him my arm, and he gave a quick look round.
- CHAPTER SIX.
- I ran forward and popped my head in at the galley.
- CHAPTER SEVEN.
- CHAPTER EIGHT.
- I shook my head.
- CHAPTER NINE.
- There was a pause for a few moments, and then Mr Frewen said--
- CHAPTER TEN.
- Then my heart sank, for the man shouted suddenly--
- CHAPTER ELEVEN.
- Then from overhead came in Jarette's voice--
- I gave a jump.
- CHAPTER TWELVE.
- I told him that Jarette was at the head of it all.
- I was silent for a few moments, and he repeated his question.
- I told him what I knew, and I heard him grind his teeth.
- CHAPTER THIRTEEN.
- I shook my head.
- There was a dead silence for a few moments, and then Mr Brymer spoke--
- The captain spoke again--
- Then Mr Frewen spoke--
- CHAPTER FOURTEEN.
- This was followed by a sharp rap on the door, and a voice cried--
- CHAPTER FIFTEEN.
- I drew back and reported what I could see, and Mr Frewen whispered--
- Just as he had turned his head, Mr Preddle's soft, smooth voice said--
- CHAPTER SIXTEEN.
- CHAPTER SEVENTEEN.
- It was this:--
- I pointed downward.
- I shook my head.
- I whispered the question through the hole, and listened for the answer.
- I asked, and the answer came back--
- CHAPTER EIGHTEEN.
- CHAPTER NINETEEN.
- CHAPTER TWENTY.
- Then some one spoke again--
- Then coming back to the window--
- CHAPTER TWENTY ONE.
- I could not help shuddering slightly at this.
- CHAPTER TWENTY TWO.
- As soon as the roar and rush of water had passed, Mr Frewen whispered--
- I jumped up directly.
- CHAPTER TWENTY THREE.
- CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR.
- CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE.
- Before I had time to speak Mr Denning cried fiercely--
- I had heard a cry as he spoke.
- Then distinctly heard came the words--
- I told him what had happened, and Mr Brymer said quietly--
- And again directly after, as if he who uttered the cry were in agony--
- I told them what I had discovered, and Mr Brymer gave an angry stamp.
- And Mr Brymer--
- CHAPTER TWENTY SIX.
- I laughed.
- Then with his face close to the hatch he shouted--
- CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN.
- CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT.
- I glanced at Mr Denning, and saw him wince.
- CHAPTER TWENTY NINE.
- I handed him the packet without a word.
- I went away pretty well loaded, and walked to the galley.
- I flushed up.
- CHAPTER THIRTY.
- I shuddered, and every one turned pale.
- Then after a very long pause Mr Frewen said--
- But all was quite clear and plain again, as I heard Bob Hampton say--
- CHAPTER THIRTY ONE.
- CHAPTER THIRTY TWO.
- I had an endorsement of my opinion a minute later, for Bob growled out--
- There was perfect silence for some minutes, and then came a deep--
- CHAPTER THIRTY THREE.
- There was a loud grunting and rustling, and Bob said, panting--
- Then I heard Jarette say something that sounded like--
- The rustling went on, and I heard Dumlow whisper--
- I shook it.
- All at once, as I was crawling more freely, my companion whispered--
- We listened, and there was whispered, close to us apparently--
- That knocking came so plainly and from so near now that I at once said--
- CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR.
- CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE.
- CHAPTER THIRTY SIX.
- They both answered "No."
- Then Mr Frewen spoke out--
- I was silent.
- CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN.
- I shook hands all round, Mr Brymer whispering--
- I stopped short there, for I thought of his pistol and Walters' wound.
- CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT.
- CHAPTER THIRTY NINE.
- Then came a sharp whisper--
- Mr Frewen turned to Miss Denning, and said firmly--
- CHAPTER FORTY.
- CHAPTER FORTY ONE.
- Mr Brymer gave me a nod, meant for encouragement, as he went on--
- CHAPTER FORTY TWO.
- I seized the brass nozzle and held it ready.
- Then I started, for from close behind me came Mr Brymer's voice--
- I handed the nozzle.
- CHAPTER FORTY THREE.
- CHAPTER FORTY FOUR.
- CHAPTER FORTY FIVE.
- I nodded.
- CHAPTER FORTY SIX.
- CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN.
- I thought he was killed, and the men ceased rowing.
- CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT.
- THE END.
