665. _thrustles_, throstles, thrushes; see Parl. Foules, 364.

_terins_; F. _tarin_, which, Littré says, is the _Fringilla spinus_.

Cotgrave has: '_Tarin_, a little singing bird, having a yellowish body, and

an ash-coloured head'; by which (says Prof. Newton) he means the siskin,

otherwise called the aberdevine.

_mavys_, mavises, song-thrushes. If we take the _mavis_ to be the

song-thrush, _Turdus musicus_, then the throstle may be distinguished as

the missel-thrush, _Turdus viscivorus_. But the mavis is also called

throstle. In Cambridge, the name is pronounced _mavish_ (romic mei·vish).
