656. The rime is only a single one, in _-ing_.

658. _Alpes_, bullfinches; also called _an awp_, or, corruptly, _a nope_.

'Alp, or _Nope_, a bulfinch. I first took notice of this word in _Suffolk_,

but find since that it is used in other counties, almost generally all over

England'; Ray's Collection of South and E. Country Words (1691).

_wodewales_, witwalls. In the Prompt. Parvulorum, the _wodewale_ is

identified with the _wodehake_, woodpecker; whilst Hexham explains Du.

_Weduwael_ as 'a kinde of a yellow bird.' There is often great confusion in

such names. The true _witwall_ is the Green Woodpecker (_Gecinus viridis_).

We may omit _and_, and even _were_ in l. 657.

662. _laverokkes_, larks. The A. S. _l[=a]werce_, _l[=a]ferce_, became

_laverk_; then the final _k_ was exchanged for the diminutive suffix _-ok_.
