XXVII

The gift of the body when the soul is given is

but the accomplishment of two affections drawn

headlong one towards the other.

You are only happy in your body that is so lovely

in its native freshness because in all fervour

you may offer it to me wholly as a total alms.

And I give myself to you knowing nothing except

that I am greater by knowing you, who are ever

better and perhaps purer since your gentle body

offered its festival to mine.

Love, oh! let it be for us the sole discernment

and the sole reason of our heart, for us whose

most frenzied happiness is to be frenzied in our

trust.
