a-circumflex is represented by [^a];
a-ring is represented by [oa];
ae-ligature is replaced by AE, Ae or ae;
e-grave is represented by [e'];
o-acute is represented by ['o]
oe-ligature is represented by [oe].
Greek cursive characters are shown as [alpha], [beta] and [gamma]. One
instance of a symbol of a square with a dot at the centre is indicated
[square with dot].
Italic typeface is represented by _underscores_; small caps typeface is
represented by ALL CAPS; superscripts are represented by a preceding
caret (^).
