The following is reported to have been inscribed by the Pope (1725) over
the gate of the Apostolical Chancery:
"Fide Deo--dic saepe preces--peccare caveto--
Sit humilis--pacem delige--magna fuge--
Multa audi--dic pauca--tace secreta--minori
Parcito--majori cedito--ferto parem.
Propria fac--non differ opus--sis aequas egeno--
Parta tuere--pati disce--memento mori."
