[Footnote 1439: There is unfortunately a gap in the _Correspondance

Consulaire_ of Cairo preserved in the Archives of the Ministère des

Affaires Etrangères, between June, 1804, and April, 1808. I was refused

access to the “Cartons” of the Consulate of Alexandria, on the plea that

“cartons” were only accessible to the year 1793. M. Driault had,

however, been allowed to make use of them. He states (_Politique

Orientale de Napoléon_, p. 116) that there is in them a gap from 14

April to 12 Oct., 1807. The explanation is that Drovetti corresponded in

1807 exclusively with Sebastiani. The Ambassador, however, neither

communicated nor referred to the reports of the Consul. As a matter of

fact, it is only in the despatch of 28 April, 1807, that he refers to

the capture of Alexandria by the British. (Arch. Aff. Et. Turquie,

Corresp. Pol., 213.)]
