Men that are Habitually Wicked, may now and then by Fits and Starts feel
certain Motions of Reflexion that look toward Repentance; but those
Dispositions are commonly short Liv’d, and the same Meat shall be Fish or
Flesh as it may best serve their Turn. We find this Fable Moraliz’d in
our Daily Practice, not only among our _False Converts_, upon the Matter
of Truth, Steadiness and Justice, but among _Politicians_, _Lawyers_,
and _Divines_, that shall make the most Establish’d Principles of Law,
Prudence and Religion, _Felons of themselves_, and by the help of a
little _Sham_ and _Paradox_, _Blow Hot and Cold_, with the _Man_ and the
_Satyr_, out of the same Mouth. This _Wolf_ now was somewhat of the Mans
Humour that was Charg’d by his _Confessarius_, for Eating Flesh in Lent:
Father, says he, I have as Catholick a Faith as any Man in Christendom;
but a most Confounded Heretical Stomach. So the Wolves Heart was Right
all this while, and by turning _Hog_ into _Porcus_, he kept his Fast in
_Latin_ still, though he broke it in _English_.
