In the hall are placed the two fine figures that represent raving and
melancholy madness, for which Louis XIIth of France offered twelve
thousand louis-d’or. They were executed by the celebrated Caius Gabriel
Cibber, father of Colley Cibber, the dramatist and poet laureat; and
they were repaired in 1820, by Mr. Bacon. They formerly decorated the
pillars of the gateway entering to the Old Hospital in Moorfields. The
building, and the grounds for exercising the patients, occupy an area
of about twelve acres.
