The investigation at Hummelstown shows that there is little or no
difference in the number and vigor of the sprouts produced by peeled
and unpeeled stumps. In many cases, the sprouts reached a height of six
feet or more in a single year’s growth. The sprouts from peeled stumps
frequently spring from the roots, 2 to 4 inches from the stump, and
push through three inches or more of soil. This will undoubtedly aid
in keeping them free from disease, and the new growth will be better
rooted than ordinary stump sprouts.
