- Franz brightened a little. "I like to chop wood."
- Franz's father said, "He can cut wood."

- Franz said, "This is enough for two."
- Franz asked, "Do you save everyone?"
- Franz asked, "What is your greatest difficulty?"

- Franz shouted, "They are already my friends."
- Anton replied, "Down in the pasture."
- Franz said meekly, "Yes, Anton."
- 8: A FREE DAY
- Anton said, "Soon it will be."
- 9: THE BLIZZARD
- The young girl said, half-contemptuously, "You have no faith."
- Franz said, "Caesar always knows the safe trails."
- Franz answered unhesitatingly, "Yes."
- Franz said, "Go, Caesar."
- Father Benjamin said, "We will rest."
- 10: THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD
- Franz said, "It is very great labor."
- Franz went on, "Some said it was God Who saved us."
- Anton smiled gently. "Not you, little Franz. You stay here."
- Anton said shortly, "You stay here."
- 11: CAESAR'S SENTENCE
- Anton said, "I fear he has found enough for mine."
