- DOUBLE CHALLENGE
- THE JOLT
- Ted said confidently, "I'll work it out."
- Ted's heart leaped. This was what he'd always wanted. "Thank you."
- Thornton said, "I want them."
- Thornton looked shrewdly at him. "But before the season?"
- Ted said reluctantly, "It might be done."
- Ted heard himself saying, "No, Mr. Thornton."
- Thornton looked puzzled. "I don't understand."
- THE THREAT
- Al remained calm. "He what?"
- Al said, "Come off it, Ted."
- Al arched surprised brows. "Why's he want those two bucks?"
- Al said, "Oh yes I can."
- Al grinned ruefully, "Seems like yesterday I worked here."
- Ted asked without much interest, "What happened?"
- Ted almost yelled, "Dad!"
- Al's words were almost an explosion. "Smoky Delbert!"
- Smoky looked at him through insolent, half-closed eyes. "Nope."
- Al said, "I can do that, too!"
- THE CAMP
- Al shrugged. "Says 'bout everythin' you got to say."
- Ted said meekly, "Yes, Dad."
- Al surveyed the place critically. "Not much like Crestwood."
- Ted teased, "It is kind of ramshackle."
- Al asked, "Can you think of any more excuses for deep thinkin'?"
- Ted ducked and sputtered, "For Pete's sake, dog!"
- Al grinned. "He thinks you need a bath."
- Ted said tiredly, "What a refreshing sense of humor my old pappy's got."
- THE FUGITIVE
- Jack Callahan challenged, "What do you mean by that?"
- Al said quietly, "Stay out of this, boy."
- Al said disgustedly, "Don't be a fool!"
- Al seemed a little contemptuous. "You ever make that crossin'?"
- Jack Callahan said, "I'm afraid I'll have to take you in, Al."
- Loring Blade said relievedly, "That's a help, Al. Thanks."
- Callahan answered reluctantly, "I'll stay."
- Ted said, "Dad--"
- Al said, "Reckon not, Lorin'."
- Callahan said, "There's evidence to the contrary."
- Finally Loring Blade asked, "Are you ready, Al?"
- There was a ring of command in Al's voice, "No, Ted!"
- Ted said reluctantly, "If that's what you want--"
- COON VALLEY
- Loring Blade greeted Ted, "Good morning, Ted."
- The boy muttered, "Good morning."
- Loring Blade exclaimed, "Wow!"
- Ted whispered, "What are we going to do, Tammie?"
- Ted ordered, "Go ahead, Tammie."
- Ted said, "Come on, Tammie."
- MESSENGER DOG
- GUNMAN STILL AT LARGE
- His captor asked sternly, "What are you doing here?"
- Nels smiled sadly. "Mad."
- He looked up and said, "Howdy, boy."
- Ted sighed relievedly, "Oh, thank you!"
- A FLIGHT OF WOODCOCK
- Ted tried to cover his confusion with a shrug. "Not much change."
- Your dad
- TROUBLE FOR NELS
- Your dad
- Arthur Beamish bubbled, "You get the best ideas!"
- Stars shone in Nels' woebegone eyes. "You mean it?"
- Your dad
- A BLACK BEAR CHARGES
- Ted said reluctantly, "He's killed twenty-three."
- Ted asked, "Can you handle the stoves and everything?"
- Ted came close and whispered, "Come on! I've got one spotted!"
- Ted shouted, "Shoot!"
- DAMON
- He asked, "Are you Ted Harkness?"
- Ted shook the proffered hand. "I--I thought you'd be different."
- John Wilson said, "A nice head."
- Ted commented, "He was a darn' big buck."
- Ted answered firmly, "No sir. He was not."
- Ted grinned. "All right, John."
- Your dad
- John Wilson said, "He should have had that one with a slingshot."
- John Wilson nodded. "That listens all right."
- An hour later, he heard John Wilson's, "Hall-oo!"
- John Wilson murmured, "Gad, what a buck! Is the other as big?"
- PYTHIAS
- Ted said happily, "Alan, I love you!"
- The other looked suspiciously at him. "Do you feel all right?"
- John Wilson looked at him curiously. "What's up?"
- Ted said, "Ten inches."
- John Wilson asked, "He's been wounded before, eh?"
- AL'S BETRAYAL
- Ted grinned. "Have they been pushing you pretty hard, Loring?"
- Loring Blade looked puzzled. "What do you want to know, Ted?"
- When the two had finished eating, Ted asked, "Shall we go?"
- Ted asked, "You tired?"
- Loring Blade asked, "What now?"
