Maestricht, a city of the Netherlands, about four miles in
circumference, seated on the Meuse, opposite Wyck, with which it
communicates by a stone bridge, was looked upon as one of the strongest
fortified places in Europe, and, from the importance of its position,
has endured several remarkable sieges.
