- Jaro laughed. "How did you know Red had been kidnapped?"
- Jaro raised his eyebrows. "Perhaps then you know where she is?"
- Mr. Peet shook his head. "No. Karfial Hodes' men abducted her."

- Miss Webb raised her eyebrows. "What's this? A new technique?"
- Albert Peet sighed. "I have the check made out."
- Mr. Peet's face fell. "You won't reconsider?"
- The girl's eyes widened. "They know where he is?"

- Joan gulped, her eyes big as saucers. "But what do we know?"
- Joan blushed hotly. "Oh," she said. "How do you do?"
- She glanced helplessly at Jaro. "Where shall I go?"
- Joan suddenly went, "_Awk_."
- Landovitch said, "Well take care of Peet's men."

- He said: "Hail, fairest of all maidens. I am Nemi come for my bride."
- Joan repeated, "Where did you come from?"
- He waved his hand airily. "Out of the nowhere into the here."
- Jaro said, "I'm going in and talk to her. Wait here."
- He ignored her question, asked, "Are you being held by Karfial Hodes?"
- Jaro said: "Where does Karfial Hodes keep himself?"
- He laughed, said, "I'm afraid so."
- Joan clutched his hand again. "That woman!"
- Joan sniffed. "Not likely."
- The queen said, "You are an Earthman."
- Jaro said, "Yes, your majesty."
- Behind him Joan screamed. "Jaro," she cried. "Help!"
- He looked at Joan quizzically, said: "All roads lead to Rome."
- Jaro straightened, said, "One of Albert Peet's renegade whites."
- A man's voice beside him said: "Jaro! My God! Is that you, Jaro?"

- Landovitch whistled softly. "The rain god."

- She hesitated, said, "Your words."
- Jaro stopped short. "What do you mean? What's coming off here?"
- The T.I.S. agent grinned. "As it happens, I did."
