- EIGHT
- Edri laughed. "Optical illusion. But a striking one, isn't it?"
- Kerrel spoke at last. "Good. That's what I wanted to be sure of."
- Shairn said, "Try me."
- Joris stopped his pacing and said, "Come here."
- NINE
- Shairn said softly, "Look at it, Michael. It's all yours."
- Trehearne shook his head. "I won't tell you, since none of it was true."
- Shairn looked up at him, heavy-eyed. "You were gone so long, Michael."
- Shairn touched his arm. "Come, Michael."
- TEN
- Red-head in Upper One said, "I'm Perri. Low man in the generator room."
- Trehearne said painfully, "On Earth there was a Cardinal...."

- Trehearne said, "Who offered you the ship?"
- FOURTEEN
- Trehearne said bitterly, "Someone else did."
- He said, "You haven't forgotten me then?"
- She asked suddenly, "Where did you get that?"
- Trehearne sprang up. "Arrested?"
- FIFTEEN
- Trehearne asked, "What happened?"
- Trehearne rose to his feet. "I'm going back to the city, Shairn."

- Joris demanded, "What's all this about?"
- SIXTEEN
- Joris said, "That isn't what I mean."
- But Joris nodded and said, "Yes."

- Joris grunted, suddenly punched the controls. "Hang on!"
- SEVENTEEN
- Trehearne demanded, "Why are we going to Thuvis?"
- Edri paused, then added, "Do you wonder that we venerate such a man?"
- Edri's jaw dropped. "Shairn?"
- Edri said, "Come on, Shairn. A glass of wine will do you good."
- Edri cried to him, "No time for talk now, Arrin! Is that all of you?"
- EIGHTEEN
- Kerrel shook his head. "You wouldn't kill her, Trehearne."
- Kerrel asked, "What do you want?"
- Joris said, "We'll take that chance!"
- Again Kerrel hesitated. "What are your terms?"
- She said quietly, "Do you still love me, Michael?"
- He bent his head. "I'm sorry you got caught in this."
- NINETEEN
- Trehearne heard someone ask, "Who was Lankar?"
- Joris said, "The hell with Lankar. Get on with it."
- Joris said flatly, "It isn't going to work."
- Edri said, "What are we going to do?"
- Edri said, "Surrender as soon as you're challenged, Joris."

- Ristin sighed regretfully. "The interests of the state demand it. Yes."
