[This text includes characters that require UTF-8 (Unicode) file
encoding, including:
‖ (double line, used to separate items in critical apparatus)
⁊ (Tironian ampersand)
ā ǣ (vowels with macron or “long” mark)
ę ŷ (other less common diacritics)
ȝ (yogh, see Transcriber’s Notes)
ł (abbreviation for “vel”, see Transcriber’s Notes)
If any of these characters do not display properly--in particular, if
the diacritic does not appear directly above the letter--or if the
apostrophes and quotation marks in this paragraph appear as garbage,
make sure your text reader’s “character set” or “file encoding” is set
to Unicode (UTF-8). You may also need to change the default font.
In this e-text, Ælfric’s Grammar and Glossary is given twice. First
it is presented as printed, with full critical apparatus and text
formatting. It is then repeated with only the plain text, as edited
by Zupitza (text search: “TEXT-ONLY VERSION”).
The editor used three kinds of typographic markings: italics, shown
conventionally with _lines_, gesperrt (spread-out) text, shown here with
#marks#, and small capitals, shown here as ALL CAPITALS. All three are
used in the body text; in the apparatus, only italics occur regularly.
Although the content is prose, the body text is shown indented to
preserve line numbering; page numbers are given in [[double brackets]].
Words split across a page or line break have sometimes been moved _down_
(to the lower line) to agree with the critical apparatus.
Further details about the text and transcription are given in the
Transcriber’s Notes.]
