- CHAPTER ONE
- He smiled and Flip smiled back, murmuring shyly, "I hope so."
- Flip knew just enough German to answer, "Nein."
- To this Flip was able to answer "Oui."
- Flip nodded. "They were sent on with my trunk."
- Jackie laughed. "That's silly."
- Flip admitted, "I'm not very good. I fall over my feet."
- Jackie looked at it longingly. "It's divine. It's absolutely divine."
- Erna and Jackie chorussed, "Yes, Miss Tulip, thank you, Miss Tulip."
- Gloria echoed Erna and Jackie. "Yes, Miss Tulip, thank you, Miss Tulip."
- Erna and Jackie wandered over. "Hallo, what are you two talking about?"
- Erna grinned. "What were you saying?"
- Flip shook her head. "At home I'm called Flip."
- Gloria began to giggle. "I know what! We can call her Pill!"
- Flip shook her head. "No, thank you."
- Flip smoothed out her bottom sheet and tucked it in. "Why not?"
- CHAPTER TWO
- Flip answered in a low voice. "Yes."
- Jackie pointed at Flip. "And you?"
- And Jackie asked again, "Where?"
- Gloria wailed, "You're trying to confuse me."
- Gloria stood up and stretched. "What's next?"
- Gloria, still chewing, answered meekly. "Yes, Fräulein Hauser?"
- Fräulein Hauser held out her hand. "Come here."
- Flip nodded, then said, "Yes. He is."
- Flip shook her head. "No."
- She took his hand. "Who else would it be?"
- She shook her head. "No. I hate it."
- Flip shook her head. "Where would I get the salt?"
- Finally Erna said, "For heaven's sake stop, Esmée. You've done enough."
- Gloria jabbed again. "Oh, blow."
- Erna took the needle from her. "Here, stupid. Let me do it."
- Erna considered. "Well, let's see."
- Flip actually grinned. "To me? What do you mean? Nothing."
- Instead of answering Paul asked, "Would you like to see the chateau?"
- CHAPTER THREE
- Flip shook her head violently. "I'm all right. Just getting a cold."
- Madame Perceval smiled. "Pick up your stitch," she said. "We can wait."
- Flip shook her head and stared miserably up at Madame, "No, Madame."
- Flip jerked erect on her stool. "How did you know!"
- Flip's jaw dropped open. "But Madame!" she sputtered. "But Madame!"
- She nodded, then added, "I want to be like them and like myself, too."
- She could only ask, "But why, Paul? Why?"
- CHAPTER FOUR
- Flip gritted her teeth. "I'll learn."
- Flip nodded. "Every morning."
- Madame laughed. "She certainly will."
- Then Erna's voice came. "Flip."
- Flip opened the door and came out. "Thanks, Erna."
- But Martha smiled in a friendly way and said, "Hi, Philippa."
- And Martha said, "We came down to see if you'd do us."
- CHAPTER FIVE
- She shook her head again. "I haven't anything. What are you doing here?"
- Paul returned, saying, "Thérèse says there wasn't anybody there."
- Paul grinned rather shyly. "If you'd like me to."
- Paul laughed, too, and then sighed, "I'm so glad you're here!"
- And she asked, "Where are mother's clothes?"
- After a moment Paul said, "Let me see the picture."
- When they got to the gate house Paul said, "Don't tell my father."
- But Paul shook his head again. "I know what I have to do."
- Paul put his head down on his knees. "I won't let you do that."
- CHAPTER SIX
- Flip, her eyes shining, whispered, "More than anything."
- Erna nodded. "You're _sure_ you won't tell anybody?"
- Paul laughed. "All right. Go ahead."
- Paul gave Flip a nudge. "I suppose you'll all be signing up for things."
- Flip looked up at the older girl. "Yes, Kaatje."
- But she knelt by Erna and said, "What happened?"
- He nodded. "Looks like it to me. Lets go for a walk, Flip."
- He held out his hand and she took it. "Yes, Paul."
