I hate the Moor: my cause is hearted.

Shak.

This word is chiefly used in composition; as, hard- hearted,

faint-hearted, kind-hearted, lion- hearted, stout-hearted, etc. Hence

the nouns hard- heartedness, faint-heartedness, etc.

Heart"ed*ness, n. Earnestness; sincerity; heartiness. [R.] Clarendon.

See also the Note under Hearted. The analysis of the compounds gives

hard-hearted + -ness, rather than hard + heartedness, etc.

Heart"en (h‰rt"'n), v. t. [From Heart.] 1. To encourage; to animate; to

incite or stimulate the courage of; to embolden.

Hearten those that fight in your defense.

Shak.
