Captain Moss, the grandfather of Mrs. Will Sims, of Jefferson, in 1836
operated and owned one of the finest steamboats on the river—The
Hempstead. He assisted Captain Shreve in blowing out the rafts to make
Cypress Bayou navigable to Jefferson and during the Mexican war he
transported soldiers across the river into Texas.
