_Holland Land_ (Vol. ii., p. 267.).--Holland means _hole_ or _hollow land_--land lower than the level of contiguous water, and protected by _dykes_. So _Holland_, one of the United Provinces; so _Holland_, the southern division of Lincolnshire.
