It is suggested that this volume may be of considerable assistance not
only to students using the ordinary text-books, but also to those whose
work is based on some such series as Messrs. Bell's +English History
Source Books+. The author's object has been to produce a volume that
will be an aid to, and not a substitute for, reading, and it is hoped
that it may be of value as giving a summary of important events and a
review of national development.
