The only biography which Mrs. Gaskell wrote was _The Life of Charlotte
Brontë_, which is one of the best biographies ever written. It has now
become a classic. At the time of her death, in 1865, Mrs. Gaskell was
collecting material for a Life of Madame Sévigné.
Mrs. Gaskell has written very little that is autobiographical. She always
studied to keep herself in the background, though her stories contain
much that is based on her own life.
