“Was there any money from your bank on that stage this morning?”
Felix Bray cleared his throat slowly, seemingly reluctant to divulge any
information.
“Yuh know it was held up, don’t yuh?” asked Brick.
“I—I heard that it was, sir; but I have no information as to what was
stolen. I believe there was a certain amount of money aboard, but am not
prepared to say what amount. If it is necessary for you to know the
exact amount, perhaps Mr. Nestor can give you the figures, sir.”
“He’s yore cashier?”
“Yes, sir. Is there anything else?”
“Nothin’ but curiosity,” grinned Brick. “Thanks.”
“You are entirely welcome, sir.”
Felix Bray gave a bird-like nod of his head and went on up the street.
“Nestor, eh?” mused Brick aloud. “Know him, Harp?”
“Heard of him,” grinned Harp. “Heard that he went out to see Soapy
Caswell’s daughter. Soapy got real tough and told Nestor to rattle his
hocks off the Circle Cross. Said he’d be —— if his daughter would ever
marry a counter-jumper.”
