With notes and biographies. By AUGUSTUS WHITE LONG, Preceptor in
English, Princeton University, Joint Editor of Poems from Chaucer to
Kipling
This book is intended to serve as an introduction to the systematic
study of American poetry, and, therefore, does not pretend to
exhaustiveness. All the poets from 1776 to 1900 who are worthy of
recognition are here treated simply, yet suggestively, and in such a
manner as to illustrate the growth and spirit of American life, as
expressed in its verse. Each writer is represented by an appropriate
number of poems, which are preceded by brief biographical sketches,
designed to entertain and awaken interest. The explanatory notes
and the brief critical comments give much useful and interesting
information.
