When the fire is left to die out overnight any risk from sparks is
avoided by closing all the doors.
In summer, when the fire is off, the grate entirely closed presents
an ornamental appearance, preferable to any kind of fire-screen. The
special ventilator beneath canopy efficiently ventilates the room.

These stoves are the original British Made Anthracite Stoves, and
as their principal parts are patented they possess advantages that
cannot be found in any imitation. They can be fitted in front of
almost any grate without any structural alterations and fed every 12
to 24 hours, can be kept alight right through the winter at a cost
of about one sixth of what a gas stove would cost. The surround, or
extension, which is included in the above prices, greatly improves
the appearance, but the stoves can be supplied without it at a
deduction of from 9/6 to 29/6 off the above prices. Free delivery
to any station in England, Scotland or Wales. Ask for full “Esse”
Catalogue giving other designs and full details.

[Illustration: THE NEW EAGLE PORTABLE RANGE.]
This new Portable Range is of a distinct and improved type in which
are embodied several notable features and advantages. The Ovens
are exceptionally large and thoroughly ventilated, and can be very
quickly heated with the smallest quantity of fuel.
The simplest one movement of the poker converts the fire from
closed to open. The Oven and Boiler Dampers are combined into one
Self-indicating Damper, showing by the position of letters whether
the heat is on the Oven or Boiler only or both together.
A Draught Regulator is provided in the Hood, which can be regulated
to check the too rapid working and overheating of the Range. This
is automatically closed when an open fire is made. Improved Side
Boiler. No danger of cracking or burning out. All wearing parts are
interchangeable and easily replaced.

[Illustration: THE “LIGHTNING” GEYSER.]
Made of very best hardened copper, all water-chambers tinned and
SEALED so that no fumes or other product can come in contact with
water while it is being heated. The water may be used for drinking,
cooking, or other purposes, as well as for the bath.
It is fitted with automatic valve, which controls the gas. The great
advantage of this Geyser over less expensive patterns is that it is
made of heavy material and therefore will wear far longer and give
every satisfaction to the user.

HAND POWER PASSENGER LIFT.
[Illustration]
Lifts for raising Invalids are often made on the hand power
principle. The Gearing is of amply strong spur wheel and pinion
type, machined V wheels for the ropes, and a powerful band brake.
All the wheels are securely fitted to steel shafts running in
suitable bearings. One hemp or manilla rope is usually used for
suspending the cage, and the guides are of well seasoned wood,
carefully prepared and jointed. The Cage can of course be made
in any design, but unless specially ordered consists of American
whitewood, V jointed, stained and varnished; but if required it can
be made of a design similar to illustration in mahogany or oak at an
increased expenditure. The Lift is hauled up and down by an endless
rope, and the brake cord is arranged close at hand for applying as
required.
Prices of Lift as above described. For travel of 10 ft. with Cage as
described above.

COUNTRY HOUSE LIGHTING.

AIR GAS LIGHTING.
An excellent method of lighting Country Houses is by Air Gas, which
is becoming very popular on account of low first cost, small upkeep,
and the general satisfaction obtained from its use. Air Gas can
be made available for illuminating establishments of all sizes,
and especially those of moderate dimensions, being quite simple in
manufacture and free from risk of explosion. Harrods have tested
every make of machine in the market, and can strongly recommend
Cox’s system. These machines are low in price but excellently made.
A 30-light machine can be run at its full capacity upon one gallon
of petrol for 4½ hours, each light giving about 100 c.p. It should
be understood that each light can, on all plants, be subdivided into
lights of less candle-power.

ACETYLENE (GAS) FOR COUNTRY HOUSES.
We undertake the installation of complete ACETYLENE plants, and send
an expert to advise Clients or give an estimate for work required to
be done.
The ACETYLENE FLAME is peculiar and good in its affording a light
more like that given by the sun (daylight) than any other artificial
light; both colours and tints can be readily matched, and pictures
can be appreciated by it. No other artificial light has this quality.
The products of combustion are the same as from coal gas, but only
about one-twelfth the volume for a given light. The Acetylene flame
is quite smokeless.
It is a safe light, Acetylene being less poisonous than coal gas.
As the issue from an open burner is so small, it would have to be
left open for a very long period in a closed room to render the air
dangerous to breathe. The slow issue of gas is also an element of
safety against explosion, for a burner would require to be left open
several days to make an explosive mixture in a room.
[Illustration]
A good and reliable Generator is of course necessary to ensure the
foregoing.
New piping, if required, is inexpensive, as it only needs to
be one-third the size of piping for coal gas. Small pipes are
inconspicuous when run in finished rooms.
The Generator here illustrated is the Cavendish “A.B.C.”
(automatic), and is considered the most simple and economical
now before the public. The attention needed that of a lad or odd
man, is not more than ten minutes daily, and much less than the
time required by lamps. There are no mechanical parts except two
water taps, and nothing to get out of order or readily wear out.
The generating apparatus consists of the central gas holder, on
each side of which is a generating chamber and a condenser. The
generating chambers are in duplicate and work independently, which
is a great advantage in admitting of re-charging always being done
in daylight without wasting unspent material. The gas given is cool
and clean. There is no compression of gas or variable pressure from
the holder. There is a positive working escape pipe if the holders
should be carelessly over-charged. The Insurance Companies charge no
extra premiums where this Generator is used.

ELECTRIC LIGHTING FOR COUNTRY HOUSES, ETC.
[Illustration: PLANT ON VIEW IN OUR SHOWROOM.]
HARRODS’ ELECTRIC LIGHTING SETS are suitable for Private Houses,
Hotels, Offices, Public Buildings, Works, Railway Stations, etc.
Perfect Safety--Absolute Reliability--Simple--Compact--No skilled
labour--Automatic lubrication and switch gear--Runs for hours
without attention on Common Paraffin, costs less than half
Petrol--No smell, no noise, no vibration.
HARRODS’ SETS consist of: “Rational” Patent oil engine and dynamo,
switchboard, pipes and water tank, as above. Complete with Battery.
The capacities given are the actual number of lights which the
Battery can light for six and ten hours respectively; if the lamps
are lighted direct from the dynamo the ten hours’ capacity can be
considerably increased. The lamps are metal filament at 1 watt per
candle power.
A cheaper set can be supplied, driven by Vertical Engine. Prices on
application.
Current can be supplied at 2·4d. per Board of Trade unit (this
includes depreciation, fuel, wages, and stores).
In designing the sets it has been borne in mind that they will not
be operated by a skilled mechanic, but probably by a gardener or
handy man. Everything, therefore, has been constructed with the
object of making the whole plant simple and yet absolutely reliable.
Cheaper sets can be supplied if desired, but the results of a
long experience prove that the set illustrated can be thoroughly
recommended in every way.

Ferranti Electric Disc Stove for boiling, grilling, and toasting.
Very popular because of its general usefulness and portability.
It will accomplish all the work usually done on a gas ring, with
greater cleanliness and economy. Scientifically designed so that
no heat is wasted. The best results are obtained with clean
flat-bottomed utensils. An extension plate to allow two or three
utensils to be used at one time, together with silver grill and
toaster, may be obtained in Harrods’ Electrical Showrooms.
Single Heat Disc Stoves (for voltages up to 250 volts): Diameter
of top plate, 7 in.; weight of complete stove, 6½ lbs.; current
consumption, 700-800 volts; cost per hour (electricity at 1d. per
unit), ¾d.; time required (stove hot) to boil 1½ pints of water, 7
minutes.
Price (including connector and 9 feet of flexible cord), 32/0
[Illustration: No. E L 1280.]
Ferranti Electric Duplex Disc Stove for boiling, simmering,
toasting, and baking.
This apparatus forms the basis of a complete kitchen equipment.
The Heating Discs are extremely useful for many culinary
operations, and are made flush with the main plate so that several
utensils can be placed half on for simmering on the low heat. Each
disc can be switched on separately and regulated high or low, thus
providing five ranges of heat in the oven, viz.:--1 disc low, 200
watts; 2 discs low, 400 watts; 1 disc high, 800 watts; 1 disc high
and 1 disc low, 1000 watts; 2 discs high, 1600 watts. The frame
is of cast iron, well enamelled, with nickelled edges. The whole
apparatus is strong enough for rough kitchen use and yet well
finished to encourage cleanliness and care. The electrical gear is
extremely simple and reliable, and well protected in every way.
Length, 25 in.; breadth 18 in.; weight approximately, 100 lbs. Each
disc has a maximum capacity of 800 watts on the high heat and 200
watts on the low heat.
Price (including 3 yards of strong flexible cable), 6 Guineas
[Illustration: Ferranti Electric Fire gives a clean bright heat in
five minutes, and is the most convenient form of Heater obtainable.
The bright glowing heat of the centre Disc is concentrated and
reflected, making possible a comforting comparison with a cheerful
coal fire. The Electric Fire can be used for making toast in the old
fashioned way, and grilling can be accomplished with a Dutch oven
as before an open fire. The Concave Reflector is pivotted so that
it can be tilted horizontally, in which position a small kettle of
water can be placed on the Quartz Disc and boiled in six minutes.]
Reflector: Polished Copper. Frame and Ornaments: Bronzed.
Price (including 3 yards flexible cord), 4½ Guineas.
Wire guard, 10/6 extra; current consumption 900/1000 watts; height,
28 in.; weight, 28½ lb.; diameter of reflector, 18 in. Consumes less
than one unit per hour.
[Illustration: No. E L 1291.]
Ferranti Electric Breakfast Cooker, consists of 1 Disc Stove 7 in.
diameter, 32/0; extension plate (silver plated), 10/6; 1½ pint
aluminium kettle, 8/6; 1½ pint aluminium saucepan, 8/6; griller,
10/6; toaster, 2/6; price, complete, £3 12 6
The illustration also shows a large aluminium and asbestos tray
(dull finish with bright beading), 24 in. x 18 in., price 21/0
extra. The disc stove uses 800 watts or 8/10ths of a unit of
electricity per hour. Time required to boil 1½ pints of water is
less than 15 minutes, even if the stove is quite cold to begin with.
The Griller is ready for cooking bacon, steaks, chops, etc., in a
few minutes after being placed on the hot disc. The Griller can be
set upon a dish on the table and food served “direct from the grill.”
